April 9, 2006
AUBURN, Ala. -
Ole Miss sophomore Jamie Howarth and freshman Larry Blatt each shot a 2-under-par 70 in Sunday's final round of play at the 2006 Billy Hitchcock Intercollegiate to lead the Rebels to a third place team finish. Ole Miss carded the best round of the day among the 11 teams competing with a 291 in the final round for a tournament total of 883.
"I am thrilled with the way we finished the tournament," said Ole Miss head coach Ernest Ross. "Jamie and Larry played exceptionally well the last two rounds and Kyle was fantastic on Saturday. This was another solid team performance, one we needed to have some confidence heading into the conference tournament."
Howarth and Blatt both jumped up 11 places in the standings with their best round of play coming on the final day of action. The duo was tied for 15th place after Saturday's second round. Junior Kyle Ellis finished tied for 10th place after turning in a 75 on Sunday. Ellis completed the tournament with a 220.
Freshman Will Roebuck and sophomore David Marino rounded out the scoring for Ole Miss. Both players carded 76 on Sunday. Roebuck finished tied for 42nd place with his three-day total of 231, while Marino was two strokes back at 233. He finished in a tie for 45th place.
Auburn took home the team title with a 290-277-293--860. Despite a strong push from the Rebels on Sunday, Charlotte took home second place with a total of 292-289-300--881.
Ole Miss will return to the links on Friday, April 21, when they travel to Sea Island, Ga., for the 2006 SEC Championship.
