Tveit Takes Out ITA National Rookie Of The Year In NCAA Second Round

May 25, 2006

PALO ALTO, Calif. - Ole Miss' Erling Tveit defeated the ITA National Rookie of the Year on his home court Thursday to advance to the round of 16 in the NCAA Singles Championships at the Taube Tennis Center. Tveit and Eric Claesson dropped their opening match in doubles.

Tveit, the ITA Southeast Region Player to Watch, won in straight sets over Stanford's Matt Bruch, who was seeded 9-16 in the field of 64, to avenge a loss to him in the ITA National Indoor in November.

An All-SEC first team selection, Tveit battled the Pac-10 Newcomer of the Year to a first set tiebreaker and promptly won it 7-1.

In the second set, Tveit jumped out to a 4-1 lead, but Bruch would rally to make it 4-3. After each held serve for 5-4, Bruch broke to pull even at 5-5. Tveit broke back to take the lead (6-5). He led 30-15 in his second attempt to serve it out before seeing Bruch get it to deuce. Tveit served back-to-back aces to end Bruch's 10-match winning streak.

Tveit moves onto a third round meeting against Arkansas' top player, Adrians Zguns. The two conference foes are familiar with one another, having played twice this year. Tveit beat Zguns 6-3, 6-3 during the regular season meeting between the two teams in Fayetteville and then again, 6-0, 6-1, when the two teams met in the quarterfinal round of the SEC Championships.

Tveit and Claesson, seeded 5-8, faced the Texas team of Callum Beale and Miguel Reyes Varela for the second time in a week, but came up short, 6-3, 6-4. The Texas duo gained an early break in the second set and held on for the win.

In their first meeting, Tveit and Claesson held a match point before the contest was stopped when Texas clinched the doubles on their way to a 4-1 win over Ole Miss in the round of 16.

With the loss, Tveit and Claesson end the season at 22-8.
