Lady Rebels Travel To Pittsburgh For WNIT Second Round Tilt

The Lady Rebels (17-13, 5-9 SEC) will travel to Pittsburgh, Pa., on Wednesday, March 22 to take on the Pittsburgh Panthers (20-10, 9-7 Big East) in a second round Women's NIT game. Ole Miss is playing in the WNIT for the third time in school history and picked its first-ever WNIT win in Sunday's first round victory over Kansas. The Lady Rebels defeated Kansas, 78-76, to advance to Wednesday's game, while Pitt knocked off Delaware, 64-57, on Saturday. Game time is slated for 6 p.m. (CST), at Fitzgerald Fieldhouse.

Ole Miss is led on the season by junior All-SEC First Team member Armintie Price with 17.4 points and 9.8 rebounds per game. Price, who was recently named a finalist for the 2006 WBCA/Kodak All-America Team, poured in a season-high 31 points in Ole Miss' win over Kansas.

Sophomore forward Carla Bartee has been Ole Miss' top player off the bench with 9.7 points and 3.6 rebounds per outing, although she has started four games on the season. Bartee missed the Kansas game for personal reasons, but will be available for action against the Panthers.

Junior guard Ashley Awkward has been coming on strong down the stretch. Awkward averaged 16.0 points 5.3 rebounds and 4.3 assists in Ole Miss' last three games, including the game-winning basket versus the Jayhawks.

Freshman center Shawn Goff has become a force to be recogned with as of late. Goff, who has started the last five games, turned in seven points and 10 rebounds against Kansas, including eight on the offensive glass.
 

 

Senior guard Ashley Johnson is Ole Miss' other player in double figures with 11.3 per game. Johnson leads Ole Miss with 59 three-point baskets on the season and has made 11-of-20 from beyond the arc over the last three games.

Under the direction of third-year head coach Carol Ross, the Lady Rebels are 53-38. Ross, who played at Ole Miss from 1979-82, posted her 300th career win with the triumph over the Jayhawks. She now owns a 300-159 career mark in 15 seasons.

The Pittsburgh women's basketball team (20-10, 9-7 Big East) has been selected to play in the postseason WNIT for the fourth time in school history. The Panthers defeated Delaware, 64-57, on Saturday moving their overall WNIT record to 5-3.

The Panthers enter the game led sophomore sensation center Marcedes Walker with 16.9 points and 9.4 rebounds per game. Junior guard Mallorie Winn adds 15.2 points and 4.8 boards per game. The duo both picked up All-Big EAST honors with Walker being named first team and Winn earning second team honors. Freshman Xenia Stewart also turns in 9.9 points per game and 3.2 assists.

Pitt head coach Agnus Berenato is 39-45 in her third season with the Panthers. Her overall coaching mark is 322-309 in 22 seasons.
