Ole Miss Women's Basketball Announces The Signing Of Shantell Black
April 12, 2006 OXFORD, Miss. -
Ole Miss women's basketball Head Coach Carol Ross announced the signing of Shantell Black on Wednesday. Black, who currently attends Collins Hills (Ga.) High School, signed a national letter of intent to join the Ole Miss women's basketball program beginning in the 2006-07 academic year.
"Obviously we are excited to have another young talented player joining our program," said Ross, who recently completed her third season at the helm of the Ole Miss program. "Shantell not only has a great knowledge of the game of basketball, but she has a true understanding of the point guard position."
Black, a 5-4 guard, played the point position for Collins Hill under head coach Tracey Tipton. Black and her CHHS teammates recently won the Georgia Class AAAAA state title for the second consecutive year, concluding the season with a 31-1 record and a No. 2 national ranking according to both USA Today and Sports Illustrated. The Eagles' only loss of the season came the form of a 79-75 overtime decision to No. 1-ranked Christ the King (N.Y).
"Shantell arrives at Ole Miss from a championship program," said Ross. "She's been well coached by Tracey Tipton, one of the most successful coaches in the high school ranks. It is the goal of our staff to recruit players with championship experience and Shantell knows all about winning."
Black averaged 9.2 points, 6.0 assists, 4.0 rebounds and 3.0 steals per game as a senior. The four-year letterwinner leaves Collins Hill as the school record-holder in four categories: assists in a game (13), assists in a season (175), assists in a career (431) and single-season free throw percentage (79.0%). Black earned First Team Class AAAAA honors from the Georgia Sports Writers Association and was a McDonald's High School All-America Nominee. She earned Street and Smith Honorable Mention All-America honors and was named a "Super Six" player by the Gwinnett Daily Post.
