Lady Rebel Netters Down Tennessee 4-3 On The Road
April 7, 2006
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -
The Ole Miss women's tennis team posted their biggest win of the season, downing No. 27 Tennessee 4-3 Friday night at the Goodfriend Indoor Tennis Center. The match began outside and then had to be moved indoors midway through the singles.
With the win, the Lady Rebels improved to 10-7 overall and 3-6 in the SEC, while Tennessee dropped to 9-10 and 5-4 in the conference. Ole Miss snapped a six-match losing skid to the Lady Vols. The last three meetings have been decided by a 4-3 score.
The Lady Rebels rallied to take the doubles point for a 1-0 lead. Carlin Cochran and Preethi Subramanian dominated 8-0 at No. 3 doubles, and then Tennessee won 8-1 at No. 1 to set up the deciding match on court two. Nika Koukhartchouk and Kseniia Tokarieva came back to force a tiebreaker and didn't allow a point to Tennessee as they clinched the doubles.
Ole Miss would gain a 2-0 advantage without even stepping on the court in singles, as Tennessee forfeited the No. 6 match to Mimi Renaudin.
Ghizela Schutte put Tennessee on the board with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Lady Rebel senior Virginia Tomatis at No. 4 singles.
The remaining four matches would go to three sets, with Ole Miss winning two of them for the victory. Subramanian rallied in her match against Samantha Orlin at No. 5 singles. After losing the first set 6-1, Subramanian dominated the second and third sets 6-0, 6-1 respectively, to make it 3-1 Ole Miss.
Tennessee claimed the final two matches in third sets to make it 4-3.
The Lady Rebels will try to win their second consecutive SEC match when they meet No. 28 Georgia Sunday at Noon CT at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex.
