Lady Rebel Netters Fall To Georgia 5-2
April 9, 2006
ATHENS, Ga. -
The Ole Miss women's tennis team couldn't quite make it two in a row this weekend, falling to No. 28 Georgia, 5-2 at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex Sunday afternoon. The Lady Rebels (10-8, 3-7) downed No. 27 Tennessee 4-3 on Friday to finish the weekend 1-1.
Georgia (11-8, 7-3) won the first point with 8-4 and 8-3 wins at Nos. 1 and 2 doubles respectively, to take the early 1-0 advantage.
In singles, Ole Miss evened the score at 1-1 as Mimi Renaudin defeated Georgia's Kelly Sandefer 6-1, 6-2 at No. 6.
Georgia would go back up 2-1 when 18th-ranked Natalie Frazier defeated Lady Rebel freshman Kseniia Tokarieva, 6-0, 6-3 at No. 1 singles. It was only Tokarieva's second ever match at No.1 singles. She won her match on Friday.
The remaining matches were all hotly-contested. At No. 5, Darya Ivanov out-dueled Ole Miss' Preethi Subramanian in two tiebreakers 7-6(4), 7-6(5) putting the Bulldogs up 3-1. Subramanian had one set point in the second set. Ilona Somers beat Evgenia Subbotina 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 to make the score 3-2.
Lady Bulldog Caroline Basu clinched the win for Georgia, defeating Nika Lady Rebel Nika Koukhartchouk on court three, 7-6(3), 2-6, 6-1.
"We were close, but we have to do a better job of winning the close points and taking care of the opportunities when we have them," head coach Mark Beyers said.
The Lady Rebels will close out the regular season Saturday at Mississippi State.
